Walker: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (2024)

32% 19 Reviews Tomatometer 84% 500+ Ratings Audience Score A reimagining of the long-running series "Walker, Texas Ranger," "Walker" follows the adventures of Cordell Walker, a widower and father of two with his own moral code, as he returns home to Austin after being under cover for two years, only to discover there's harder work to be done at home. He must attempt to reconnect with his creative and thoughtful son and his headstrong, somewhat rebellious teenage daughter and navigate clashes with his family -- an ADA brother who stepped in during Walker's absence, his perceptive mother and his traditional rancher father. Walker finds unexpected common ground with his new partner while growing increasingly suspicious about the circ*mstances surrounding his wife's death. Critics Consensus

Despite decent performances, Walker's bland storytelling and limited action fails to fill its namesake's butt-kicking boots.

Walker: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Roxana Hadadi AV Club I suppose that gives Walker room to grow in upcoming episodes, but for now, he's a Raylan Givens facsimile with extremely sanded-down edges. Rated: C+ Jan 22, 2021 Full Review Walker: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Dan Fienberg Hollywood Reporter The annoying thing is that being a total failure as a remake of Walker [TR]... doesn't necessarily mean that Walker is a total failure as a TV show. It's just something different, and I wish it had just committed to being that different thing entirely Jan 21, 2021 Full Review Walker: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) There are no shortage of nods to the world today, but in the pilot at least none of them shifts the needle. It's improvement by increment: the plots aren't as corny, Padalecki can act. In many ways Walker is a show of small steps forward. Rated: 2.5/5 Jan 21, 2021 Full Review Walker: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Sayan Ghosh The Hindu A forgettable reboot which takes itself too seriously. Sep 27, 2023 Full Review Walker: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Carissa Pavlica TV Fanatic It seems like the people behind Walker want to focus on family drama. That would be an excellent choice if only it wasn't set up to be a procedural. Rated: 3/5 Mar 4, 2021 Full Review Walker: Season 1 | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Melissa Camacho Common Sense Media Western cop reboot hypes Texas Ranger family drama. Darneesha O I enjoy the show and its easy to watch with my little ones around. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/11/24 Full Review Clint W The series was good but Jared Padalecki who plays Walker is a really, really bad actor. Rated 2.5/5 Stars • Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/13/23 Full Review J H Ignoring the original, it's a strange show. From the start, I don't know anything about his background. Didn't know anything about his wife so felt nothing with her role in the first episode. Cordell seemed overprotective yet instead of following up on her phone call or doing anything productive, just gave up and cried next to his truck. For a "decorated lawman," he starts off looking like a failure of a husband. Then he apparently goes undercover right away and fails his kids. Comes back from that assignment and fails to see his family. Winds up getting picked up by other law enforcement in the midst of committing a crime and gets preferential treatment. Sure, yeah, his wife's situation but he should be on leave until he gets his act together. On one hand his new partner that gave him the preferential treatment preaches at him to follow the rules and "have her back," but right away she and his friend/boss hardly address him using excessive force on a visible minority. Again, yeah, his wife but seriously, he shouldn't be on duty and should have been roasted in the media for what he did. So much for his partner and friend/boss taking the moral high-ground.Meanwhile his one kid is rebelling (again, go on leave and sort your personal life out), and he's then openly willing to use his brother's position to pull strings for new acquaintances.Just seems the show is primarily a family drama showcasing a failed cop and his morally dubious failings. I guess that's pretty fitting in today's day and age given the stereotypes of modern day male cops. I'm just not sure why I'd want to watch it. Definitely seems like it's geared to being the complete opposite of its namesake, in which case it's spot on. Instead of the Texas Rangers looking like an agency worthy of distinction, they look like an agency that turns a blind eye to the moral failings and corruption of their own. Not my cup of tea. Rated 1/5 Stars • Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/22/23 Full Review William F Me and my wife have watched every season it seems to get worse on season 3 confusing my cast join the show leave the show the writers are awful The acting is great but the writers need never to get a raise if they wrote the show a horrible We kept hoping that was going to get better to a show that grows into itself but nope it's just bad and hard to watch Rated 2.5/5 Stars • Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/25/23 Full Review Beth H The show was ok. I really didn't like how the writers made Cordell Walker so dumb down. Texas Rangers are elite, but they made him as a Ranger look foolish. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/23/23 Full Review Melissa M I want to like this show more. I love the cast. But I'd like to see real story lines where there's crimes to solve and justice for breaking the law that DOESN'T involve the entire family CONSTANTLY being the center of threats and kidnappings and suspicions of being criminals themselves... Come on now. This show could be amazing if the family could stop being targets. Give the characters a story line where they are real people with real problems and let the rangers solve non-personal crimes.
