Easy Loaded Sweet Potato Bites Recipe

These loaded Sweet Potato Bites are the perfect choice for game day snacks. If your family loves to watch football as much as mine does on the weekend, they’ll need tasty sustenance. These bite-sized treats are just the answer you’re looking for.

But as easy as they are to whip up on any ‘ol weekend, they’re also fancy enough to make for one of your Thanksgiving appetizers. Sweet, bite-sized, and topped with all your favorites (crispy bacon, anyone?), Sweet Potato Bites are always a crowd-pleaser.

Surprisingly simple to make and even easier to eat. Feel free to play with the toppings, or serve naked sweet potato bites with bowls of your favorite toppings. This way, you and your guests can dress them up any way you’d like.

What You’ll Need

When thinking about choosing game-day appetizers or easy Thanksgiving appetizers, simplicity is key. These loaded sweet potato bites use only a handful of ingredients but pack a wallop of flavor. Scroll down to the recipe card for actual amounts.

For the Sweet Potato Bites

  • Sweet Potatoes – Grab 2 pounds and cut them into 1/4 inch slices.
  • Olive Oil
  • Spice Mix – We’ll mix together chili powder, cayenne pepper, cumin, paprika, oregano, garlic, salt, and pepper.

For the Toppings

  • Franks Hot Sauce – Or choose your favorite hot sauce brand.
  • Monterrey Jack and Cheddar Cheese – You can get individual cheeses to shred or just grab a bag of Mexican shredded cheese.
  • Green Onions
  • Jalapeno Pepper
  • Sour Cream
  • Bacon – You can use bacon bits or make and crumble your own.

How to Make Sweet Potato Bites

Ready in under 30 minutes, sweet potato bites are the easy choice for football parties or holiday gatherings. Healthy, delicious, and easily adjustable for vegetarian or vegan guests.

  • Make the Spice Blend.Add all the spices into a bowl and whisk together.
  • Prepare for Baking. Preheat oven to 425°. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set it aside.
  • Prepare the Potatoes.Add olive oil, sweet potato slices, and the spice mix to a freezer bag and shake until the potatoes are nicely coated. Another option is to put everything into a mixing bowl and stir until the slices are coated.
  • Bake.Place the sweet potato slices on the prepared baking sheet, ensuring the rounds do not overlap (if possible). Bake the potatoes for 8 minutes on one side, then remove them from the oven, flip all the potatoes, and bake for another 8 minutes until soft.
  • Add Hot Sauce and Cheese. When the potatoes are done, remove them from the oven and add a dot of hot sauce. Top each round with shredded cheese and wait a few minutes for the cheese to melt (the potatoes will be hot enough at this point to melt the cheese).
  • Garnish and Serve. To serve, place the rounds on a platter. Add a dollop of sour cream on each round, and garnish with sliced green onions and jalapeño pepper. (Tip: To make the sour cream easier to dollop, mix it in a bowl with a few drops of water to loosen it). Enjoy!

Make Ahead Tips

If you’re preparing for a large Thanksgiving dinner (or even a big game-day party), it’s helpful to make certain things ahead of time. Sweet potato bites are one of those Thanksgiving appetizers that are well suited for this.

To make ahead, slice the sweet potatoes and mix your spice mix a day in advance. If you want to add any bacon, go ahead and bake that as well. You can crumble the bacon and store it separately in the fridge.

I recommend baking the sweet potatoes and assembling the bites as close to serving time as possible, so they don’t get soggy.

How to Store and Reheat

I recommend making only enough sweet potato bites as you think your guests will eat that day. If you think you’ll have leftovers, top the sweet potatoes “to order.” This will allow you to store the roasted sweet potatoes without getting mushy with the other ingredients.

When you’re ready to serve, reheat the rounds in the oven to warm and crisp them up. Then go ahead and top as you like before digging in.
