These little bites of deliciousness would be perfect for any gathering, and they're easy to customize. The possibilities are endless!

Using boxed cake mix means you can whip this up in a lot less time, too. Need a dessert at the last minute? This works well in a pinch!

What You Need to Make It

Gather your ingredients. To make this red velvet cake balls recipe, you'll need red velvet boxed cake mix and the ingredients to make it. This is what gives the cake balls such a gorgeous red color. If you have a special recipe for homemade red velvet cake, knock yourself out (and if it's easy, won't you share your recipe?!)

You'll also need chocolate fudge frosting, spiced bourbon whiskey, Ghirardelli white chocolate chips, red candy melts, Wilton confetti hearts, a disposable piping bag (This kit is great for beginners!), a cookie sheet fitted with wax or parchment paper, double boiler, and cupcake pan with cupcake liners. This red velvet cake balls recipe makes 48.

How to Make It

Preheat oven to 350°.

Prepare cake batter in a large bowl as directed on the back of the box.The box will make about 24 cupcakes.

Mix in the 2 tablespoon of the spiced bourbon whiskey. If you don't want the cake balls to be a boozy dessert, just leave this out.

Scoop batter into cupcake liners and bake for 21 minutes.

Once cupcakes have been baked and cooled, peel off the cupcake liners on 10 cupcakes.

Doing only a few cupcakes at a time, crumble cake with your hands into a large mixing bowl.

Add in about 3 tablespoons of the chocolate frosting.

Boozy Red Velvet Cake Balls Recipe (4)

Using a wooden spoon, mix until combined and you have a dough-like texture. If the cake is not sticky enough, add a bit more frosting.

Using a small ice cream or cookie scoop, place a scoop of the cake mixture into your hands and roll into 48 dough balls. After making the balls a couple of time, you'll get on a roll and it will go quickly. See tips below if you're having trouble.

Place those little balls of deliciousness onthe cookie sheet lined with wax paper.

Once all of the dough has been rolled into balls place into the fridge for 20 minutes or freezer for 10 minutes.

Using a double boiler, melt chocolate until smooth.

Once your cake balls have hardened, using a fork and butter knife, dip cake balls into the white chocolate coating and fully cover each one.

Use the fork to scoop up the cake ball and lightly tap the edge of the pot.

Place cake ball onto the cookie sheet.

Repeat previous steps until all cake balls have been rolled and dipped.

Set aside for the chocolate to completely cool.

Wash out your double boiler and dry very well. If you've worked with chocolate before, you know water will change how it reacts.

Pour about ¼ of the red candy melts into the double boiler.

Wait a few minutes and then mix with a spatula until smooth.

Pour melted candy melts into the piping bag.

Cut the tip off of the piping bag and drizzle the candy melt over the cake balls.

Place a pink confetti sprinkle heart or your choice of sprinkles onto the middle of these red velvet treats.

You could also add a lollipop stick and turn these into cake pops!

Let sit for 15 minutes before enjoying these wonderful indulgent treats!

TIPS: If you're having trouble molding your red velvet cake balls, do the best you can and stick them in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours. Once the cake balls are good and cold, roll them on a flat surface until they are nice and round.

If you're making these into cake pops, dip the stick into the melted chocolate before sticking it into the cake pop. Be sure to match chocolate color and do this before drizzling.

FAQs

How do you coat cake balls? ›

Coat the cake balls: Remove only 2 or 3 cake balls from the refrigerator at a time. Dip a lollipop stick about 1/2 inch into the coating, then insert into the center of the cake ball. Only push it about halfway through the cake ball. Dip the cake ball into the coating until it is completely covered.

Can you dip frozen cake balls? ›

But heads-up: if you store those cake pop centers in the freezer instead, plan ahead and give them a day in the fridge to thaw before the big dip-a-thon. That way, all cake balls can keep their shape nicely, and the warm chocolate will harden up quickly on your cool pop.

What is up with red velvet cake? ›

Historians believe that red velvet cake originated during the Victorian era. Cake flour wasn't around yet, so vinegar was used to tenderize cakes. When vinegar was combined with non-Dutch processed cocoa powder, the cake turned a reddish-brown hue.

How do you make cake balls not fall apart? ›

Going overboard can cause your cake balls to fall of the sticks. The best rule of thumb is to start out with a small amount of icing and slowly add more until your mix reaches the consistency of clay. In my basic cake pop recipes, I use 1/3 to 1/2 cup of frosting.

Why are my cake balls falling apart? ›

Make sure that your chocolate/candy melt is in a container that is deep enough for you to simply dip your pop into and cover completely! Moving your stick around in the chocolate/candy melt while dipping will cause your cake pops to fall apart. Dip and manipulate as little as possible!

How long do you have to refrigerate cake balls before dipping? ›

Form into cake balls and chill until set, about 2 hours. Small cake pops: 1 tablespoon-sized cake balls (each about 1 1/4 inch diameter) makes about 48 cake pops.

How far in advance can you make cake balls? ›

If you have guests or you are making cake pops to send guests home with, it's important to give them fresh cake pops, because you can't be sure when they will eat it. You can make such one or two days in advance, but not longer than that. However, cake pops can be stored up to seven days if refrigerated.

What can I use instead of candy melts for cake pops? ›

White candy melts are used for the cake pop dip. Substitute it with white chocolate chips if not available. Lollipop sticks are for holding the cake pops into place.

Can you use candy melts to ice a cake? ›

Remember, you can use any color of Candy Melts candy you want! Just make sure you have 12 oz. of candy to ½ cup of heavy cream. Once your ganache is nice and smooth, let it cool to room temperature, about 15 minutes, before pouring it on your cake.

Why is red velvet cake so expensive? ›

The cocoa powder is used in less quantity and the taste develops by the mixing of vinegar and buttermilk with the cocoa powder. The recipe involves many ingredients in small quantity. The frosting- if used cream cheese is an expensive element in itself. It tastes wow if made at home without using any premix.

What flavor is red velvet actually? ›

What flavor is red velvet? While there are cocoa undertones, red velvet is not chocolate cake because it balances both chocolate and vanilla flavors. It contains cocoa but not the same quantity as traditional chocolate cake, resulting in a more subtle cocoa flavor and tanginess due to the buttermilk and vinegar.

How do you keep cake pops round? ›

Most bakers dip their cake pops in the coating, then either put them stick side down in a cake pop stand or cake side down on a parchment or wax-papered baking sheet (although no baking is required). That's when a hefty bottom can give the pop a bell or foot shape.

How do you make a round cake rise evenly? ›

In order to bake cake evenly, you have to insulate its edges. Preventing the temperature of batter at the edge from increasing quickly allows the cake to rise longer before it sets. A cake whose edges rise at nearly the same rate as its center will remain flat across the top — no dome, perfect for stacking and icing.

What is the secret to smooth cake pops? ›

The most important part of getting a smooth finish to cake pops is the consistency of the coating, and one of the easiest ways to guarantee this is by melting candy melts correctly. It's suuuuuper easy to overheat candy melts.
