Katherine Johnson was an incredibly talented mathematician who worked for NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in the United States. Johnson also worked doing complex mathematical problems before computers were widely used and tested, meaning her calculations were done on paper. She successfully calculated the trajectory for the launch to space for the first ever American. She also calculated the trajectory for the moon landing mission in 1969. What an impressive career.

Black History Facts for Kids Fact Number 2: Chuck Berry Was The Pioneer of Rock and Roll Music

Rock and Roll is a style of music inspired by jazz, rhythm and blues, and other styles of music created by black people. Chuck Berry is nicknamed as the ‘Father of Rock and Roll’ as he introduced lyrics and musical styles which shaped the style. He was the first person who was placed in the Rock and Roll hall of fame when it opened in 1983.

Mansa Musa was the leader of the Mali empire who reigned from 1312 to 1337. Historians believe he is the richest person in history because of his incredible wealth of gold. Mansa Musa was very generous with gifts and money, giving it out to many people while he travelled. Unfortunately he gave out so much gold that it lowered how much the gold was worth. He was at least generous and was known for his many successful architectural projects.

Black History Facts for Kids Fact Number 4: Harriet Tubman Was The First American Woman to Organise a Military Operation

Harriet Tubman was born into slavery and managed to secure her freedom, despite great risk to her life and freedom during the Civil War, Harriet Tubman got involved to try and help. She worked as a cook, a nurse and later took on more responsibility as a spy and scout. In June 1863 Harriet Tubman helped co-ordinate an operation to burn down plantations and help free people from slavery. During this operation more than 700 people were freed from being slaves. This was the first time a woman had helped organise a military operation in America and it was a huge success.

Before becoming president Barack Obama studied for a degree in political science and then got his degree in Law. He was the first African American to become the president of the Harvard Law Review, a highly respected journal about law. He worked as a civil rights lawyer and a state senator in Illinois. All of his learning and career led to his 2009 election as the first African American president of the United States. He served two terms, winning both elections he ran in, which means he was president for 8 years.
